This walk is interesting rather than spectacular. Much of it is flat and through closed-in forest, but you’ll wade across the Shoalhaven River, and discover two remarkable features: a giant sinkhole, 100 m deep and approximately 35 m across, and a canyon and cave with attractive marble bands.

Deua National Park is 100 km south-east of Canberra, and covers 1220 sq km of rainforest, eucalypt forest, swamps, heath and rocky scrub. This walk starts at the Berlang Camping Area, which is 40 km south of the small town of Braidwood. Most maps advise taking the Krawaree Rd from Braidwood, but all signs in the area seem to call it the Cooma Rd.

The entrance off the road to the camping area and the Big Hole is well marked, and you’ll trundle along a dirt road for 1 km, turning sharply to the left at one point. The camping area is very, very simple, with a few picnic tables, a pit toilet and a self-book-in system. There is no tap water, but the Shoalhaven River is nearby. Boiling or other purification is recommended.
